Notes from the Beach House

I live in downtown Toronto and, on a day-to-day basis, work with my health and human services management consulting firm – Liz Yorke and Associates. At the same time, I own and manage The Beach House on Hatfield Road in Nova Scotia, which is, without doubt, the most beautiful vacation rental beach house or cottage in the province. The Beach House is private, remote and a true vacation retreat on the Bay of Fundy - with spectacular panoramic ocean views, all day long, every day of the year! As an added bonus, it is the only vacation rental property actually on or near the beach in Fox River.

In this issue of The Coast News, I’d like to share with you this gorgeous picture taken by Rudy Vodicka in January 2006. You can see the Beach House nestled in the trees and how the property is directly on 2 ocean beaches. I am so glad that Rudy gave us this picture, as my words could never describe how unique and awesome the Beach House setting really is.

Next, I want to make sure that everyone knows that the Beach House is the perfect Nova Scotia holiday accommodation for families with children, couples, small groups, and for small family events - such as reunions, anniversaries and other celebrations. Its luxury amenities include two satellite TVs (one with a VCR and the other with DVD), a beach rock fireplace & an airtight stove with a window in the door, a spa bath, fully equipped kitchen, high speed and wireless internet access, two balconies with patio furniture, an outdoor propane BBQ, loads of books & games for both adults and children, pristine scenic views and - the greatest luxuries of all - privacy and location directly on the two ocean beaches.

In closing, if you are thinking about traveling this summer to Atlantic Canada – by car, air or ship - please get in touch with me at or at 416-481-4096 to discuss your customized visit to the Beach House and last minute and special rates arranged just for you. A reminder…. the Beach House is an easy travel trip – it is just over the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick border, which decreases driving time for visitors from Quebec, Ontario, Western Canada and the US. The Beach House is also an easy drive from Halifax and Moncton International Airports and to Charlottetown, Halifax, and Moncton for day trips.

Best wishes for a wonderful summer!

The Beach House on Hatfield Road: Nature Destination

For those of you who are nature and outdoor lovers, the Beach House is a marvelous destination. Come visit and enjoy:

Kayaking provided by NovaShores Adventures – located near Cape Chignecto Park and a short drive from the Beach House

Cape Chignecto Park – only about a half hour's drive down the shore from our vacation rental property; this is an absolutely marvelous wilderness park for visitors from all over the world

Joggins Fossils Cliffs – the Joggins Fossil Institute has received confirmation that the UNESCO World Heritage Centre has examined its Nomination Dossier. The Dossier (application for inscription on the list of World Natural Heritage Sites) will now be evaluated by the appropriate advisory bodies of UNESCO, with the intergovernmental World Heritage Committee making the final decision about its inscription. It is anticipated that Joggins will be designated a World Heritage Site by the fall of 2008.

Fundy Geological Museum - in Parrsboro (15 minutes drive from the Beach House - good road and no cars), where you’ll see some of the oldest dinosaur bones in Canada and meet some of the ancient creatures that lived here millions of years ago, including the world's first reptiles, an ancestor of frogs, early dinosaurs, giant dragonflies and a sow-bug-like creature as long as a baseball bat.

And finally, nature and beach activities on the Bay of Fundy - right at your doorstep on the cottage’s two beaches - hike and walk the beaches, collect seashells, driftwood & treasures, swim, marvel at the world’s highest tides.

This photo is courtesy of Donna Cee (Allen) Benjamin - songwriter, recording artist, photographer - who enjoys walking the local beaches. Donna Cee and her husband Seldon came across this lovely baby seal - right in front of the Beach House - during a walk on the beach in the spring. As luck would have it, Donna Cee had only one picture left on her film, so she quickly took the picture as the little seal wiggled his way back to the water. Anyone interested in Donna Cee's pictures or recordings can contact her at

Isn't the seal sweet? Haven’t you already fallen in love with it?

Shaw Country Market

Everyone who has visited the Beach House knows how hospitable Gayle & Terry Shaw, owners of Shaw Country Market, are to visitors to the Parrsboro Shore. The Market recently celebrated its seventh year on the Shore Drive and Terry & Gayle want me to make sure to invite all of you to visit their restored century-old building and to explore the Antique Market on the second floor. The Antique Market has an incredible line of china, including candlewick, Royal Albert, pink, blue and green depression glass, and many antiques in mint condition and also stocks handmade quilts, paintings from the Arlene Collins Wildlife series, and many other irresistible treasures.

In addition to antiques, work by local artists, and collectibles, Shaw Country Market has the best ice cream cones around! If you want to learn more about their stock – give them a call at 902-348-2245.

When you visit the Market, be sure to tell Terry & Gayle that you read about them in The Coast News – do this between June and August 2007, and you’ll get a scrumptious ice cream cone as a gift from the Market.
